Abstract:

This study examines the relationship between years of schooling, gender equality, and national income across more than 100 countries in 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020. Using data from the United Nations
Development Programme (UNDP, 2025) and Taiwan’s Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting, and Statistics (2025), the analysis investigates the mediating effect of gender equality on the impact of educational attainment on national income. Results indicate that years of schooling have a significant positive direct effect on national income in all five years. Moreover, gender equality consistently mediates this relationship, with the mediating effect strengthening over time (from 0.10 to 0.16). Findings also reveal that the cumulative benefits of education and improvements in gender equality exert delayed effects on national income. This study contributes by providing long-term, cross-national evidence that, beyond
human capital accumulation, enhancing gender equality can more effectively promote national income, offering empirical guidance for policy development.
